The Death March

As I think I've mentioned before, I'm hoping to walk the Bataan Memorial Death March at the end of next month. I haven't done any real training for the past couple weekends, so of course we headed out today. We walked for an hour and a half, then turned around. That's when it got bad.

Turning around meant we were suddenly walking INTO the wind that had picked up quite a bit on the way out. It was miserable. I was miserable. J tried to block the wind for me a little, but it kept shifting around. We somehow managed to get back to the Jeep in the allotted hour and a half. I was then treated to a venti black tea latte (nonfat milk) and a blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese. I got the drinks at Starbucks while J got the bagels at Einstein Bros. and we met in the middle to eat.

Got home and inspected my feet. Left one has 2 blisters on the pad, 1 each on the pads of 2 toes, and a small one on the outer edge of my pinkie toe. Right foot just has the pinkie toe blister. Since we're being lazy the rest of today, I'm running around in my giant fuzzy slipper. They are soft and cushy on my blisters.

I don't really know how far we walked today. Normally, I would map it out on Google, but we use a newer piece of road, not named, that was finished after Google's latest satellite pics. The road is for military vehicles only, so it isn't likely to be updated just for that road.

Over breakfast, I talked shoes with J. See, I still don't have my Merrell Barefoot shoes. After reading reviews online, we decided it really would be best to try them on before buying. But out store said their order isn't due in until March 10. Not enough time to break them in/get used to them.

So this week, I think I will try to do some shoe shopping. I'll check out the Nike Frees, and see if I can find some Saucony Kinvaras to try on. Both recommended as good transition shoes. I think I'll also check out the Adidas and Pumas, just to see what they have. I bought the Payless shoes I'm wearing now back in October. They're not made for the kind of activity I'm putting into them. All in all, they've held up pretty well, but I think they are reaching their limit.

So now I think I will do a little more minimal shoe research. I want to walk into the Nike store knowing what to ask for. I'll see if I can figure something out for the other stores as well.

It's Almost March

I lost 4 pounds in January. I have lost maybe 1 pound in February. I also haven't been tracking my food well this month. Some days not at all. So for March, I'm going to start tracking again. I've told myself that if it's too frustrating to get every single ingredient of my meal in, I will find something close and call it good. If I can at least get a good idea of what I'm eating, and round up on my estimates, then I'm in the clear.

Also have a friend who wants to lose weight. Her oldest is old enough for preschool now, so she's thinking of putting the younger one in day care at the same time and hitting some classes at the gym. I said I would join her. Would be great to get a strength training class in.

I made it to my first yoga class last week and loved it. It felt good, and I wasn't the only one there who didn't know all the moves. I will probably miss it this week, but J will be getting off of staff duty Tuesday morning and we might go to lunch together.

I also didn't work out much last week, with both my visitor and Laura here. And by "visitor" I mean my period. I was tired all week, and had a couple days where I was constantly hungry. I want to go back to only 4 a year. I do need to get a doctor's appointment in March to talk about my migraine meds and get my cholesterol tested. I haven't been taking my verapamil but haven't had any migraines, either. I think I really am getting in shape and it might be helping my blood pressure and circulation stay at normal levels. I would like to  talk to a doc about it before I just let the prescription expire.

So! I need to post about the dress! J is in charge of planning a "Dining-out" for the battery at the end of March. It's just a big formal dinner. Which means I need to wear a formal dress. The last ball we had, I ended up borrowing a dress from a friend. So I drug Laura downtown with me. Another friend said it was "the" place to go dress shopping. She was so right. Once we started walking around we saw tons of dress shops.

The first one we went into was crammed with all kinds of dresses. I tried on some but really liked the one on the wall. Finally found it on the racks. I tried on a 12, 16, and 18. Definitely needed the 14. They didn't have any. So we went across the street. They had the same dress and had it in a 14. I bought a gorgeous formal for $90. It's strapless and pewter with a corseted back, so even if a lose another 4 or 5 pounds, I can tighten it up and it will still fit! I really do love this dress and am so happy to have it. I can wear the black heels I already have and do have some jewelry that looks great with it. I might look for something red to wear with it, though. And I decided, since I spent $90 on the dress, I can handle doing my own hair for this one. I love it when John does my hair, but I did just drop almost $100 on a new dress. I have a hair appointment around the same time, so my color and cut will be great for it.

Whew! You have now witnessed one of my girly moments. I'm not often that girly, but this dress is really that gorgeous. I will try to post pics after the big event.

I think I have purged all blogginess from my mind. Nope! One more item.

Remy jumped out of the yard when Belle and Lilly were here. Even with friends, he jumped out. I wouldn't have known how far he went, but a friend saw him crossing the busy street with live next to and called me. So now he is on his tether if he wants to play outside. I don't tether him if it's just a quick potty trip or if one of us is out with him. Any other time, for now anyway, he is tethered. Also going to call a couple places and see about getting him groomed this week. There will definitely be pics of that.

WTF Is Up With My Arm?

I took a nap this afternoon. Woke up with a sore arm. The shoulder is sore, the elbow is sore, and the soreness spreads to the wrist. I have no idea what I did.

So my good friend Laura came and spent some time visiting. She brought her 2 dogs with her. Belle is a 7 year old pug mix that I've known for a long time. She apparently ate too much of her little sister's food and put on weight. She's a pretty mellow dog. I adore her.

Lilly is a 1.5 year old boston terrier. Energetic. Dominated Remy. Of course, Remy just rolled over and let her. He eventually learned that he could play tug-o-war with her. They had so much fun. She's a good girl.

Apparently, Remy and I are both exhausted from their visit, which is why I ended up taking a nap today. Now, Laura visiting means I walked around some, but didn't really work out this week. I did go for a short bike ride with J yesterday and this morning. I guess I possibly did something to my arm on the bike ride(s). Then slept on it wrong? But one way or another, it hurts to type this so I'm going to cut it short. Hopefully it will feel better tomorrow.

If I remember, I will do another post (when the arm is better) about my dress shopping adventure with Laura.

Drama Update

DJ translated the legal garblings for me. Tom was originally charged with a felony theft but it was reduced to petty theft, a misdemeanor. So yay, my brother isn't a felon. Just a thief.

Also, why the hell don't the libraries in this city open on Friday mornings? I always forget this, but they don't open until 1300 on Fridays. It sucks. I wanted that book.

Drama Sucks

I have to write about this because my brain will not stop turning it over and over. It kept me up for 2 hours in the middle of the night.

My brother called my mom and sister yesterday. Mom was working and couldn't talk. Dotti, unfortunately, got drawn in, thinking he might want/need her help. She's not the bitch I am (which is probably why I didn't get a call).

He claimed he'd done jail time for stealing money from work. It dwindled down into an argument with his wife, as always.

So I did some research. First, he was found guilty of Battery/Domestic Violence and given 2 years probation. Then he was found guilty of felony theft. He did some jail time for the theft and probation violation.

I cannot wrap my head around the fact that my brother has a felony on his record now. And that his wife would still be with him after being found guilty of both domestic violence and felony theft, all while claiming she never wanted to marry him in the first place.

This is what kept me up in the middle of the night. I don't know how Tom is supposed to support 5 kids now. He's a felon. That's going to severely limit the jobs available to you. I worry about him. I think about him every day. I don't think his wife would let us know if something really bad happened to him unless she thought she would get something out of it. No one let us know about this felony thing until well after the fact.

I talked to DJ (Tom's former best friend, disowned with the rest of us) last night, and it was a great talk. I sent him the link to Tom's record. I don't think I want to tell Mom or Dotti. Not yet anyway. I saved the link. I hope Dotti doesn't read this. If one of them brings it up, I will say that yes, he really did serve time. I have the proof.

I don't know how to help Tom. You can't call him (even if I had the current number) without her being on the phone. And since he never calls me, who's to say he would believe/trust me anyway?

I think I need to drink some of my kava tea today. I found out that a book I've been wanting to read is available at my closest library branch, so I think I will go pick it up. I ordered my book club book with 2 day delivery, so I can hop right into that one next. I have a play date scheduled for Remy with a friend this afternoon. I'm going to try to get some sewing done.

I'm going to spend the weekend relaxing with my husband, maybe go see a movie. I'm doing my first trail run Sunday morning. I'm not going to let him bring my life to a halt for his drama.

I had a dream last night that I was somewhere with Tom, and just wanted to use the bathroom. But there was this mountain of clothes falling over the toilet. As I tried to clear it off, clothes would keep falling in the toilet water. Tom laughed and came in to help right before I woke up. Does this mean that I think he makes everything go to shit? Down the toilet? I don't know. I don't want to know.

The Mutt

So the mutt is still jumping into our neighbor's yard. I've caught him twice today. It's only the yard right next door now, since they have a dog. I just spent about 10 minutes watching him from the back door. When he would stand up in the corner (on his back legs) I would knock on the screen door, which is pretty loud. It would distract him enough that he didn't jump, but I had to keep watching.

Tomorrow I'm going to by a tether. I'm going to get one that screws into the ground and has a nice, sturdy cable tether. Not a chain. Then, when he leaves our yard without permission, he'll be put on the tether. See? This is what happens when you don't stay in your own yard. If he's being good and playing in his own yard, no tether. We can also take it camping with us if he starts wandering off. Stick with us, or get tethered. Those are your options. It will probably go with us to Wyoming in June as well. He hasn't been around chain link much, so we'll see what happens.

For the rest of today, I will just have to watch like a hawk when he goes outside. This means I can't sit and sew upstairs when the dog is outside. Dang. I enjoyed that.

In other news....the mutt stinks. I missed his bath last week, and now we've been on mandatory water conservation. I haven't even showered today. Apparently it's going to be lifted tonight, so I will probably go ahead and shower later. And bathe Remy. He's dirty. And itchy. I've found that if I give him a weekly bath with oatmeal shampoo, he itches less.

There you have it. A whole post about my dog.

Shoe Woes

So J and I took our snow day and turned it into Remy's birthday celebration. We drove him up to Ruidoso, NM, and took him to the gourmet doggy store, No Bones About It. Great place for dog and cat stuff. He got a light blue doggy backpack as his gift. Had to get him a size Small since he's so skinny! We also got him a big doggy cookie shaped like a bone that says Happy Birthday on it. Oh, and a donut cookie.

Then we headed to the store that's supposed to carry the new Merrell shoes I've been waiting for, which were finally released Tuesday. I had called this morning to make sure they would be open and asked about them. He said they had gotten some in a couple weeks ago. Yay, right?

Wrong.

Apparently he misunderstood me and was referring to an order of VFFs they got in. Their Merrell order won't be in until March 10. That's a month away!!

I had wanted to get the shoes as soon as I could and get used to them/break them in, in time to wear them for the Bataan on March 27. So we went to the website and thought about ordering them. Then we read some reviews. The men's styles apparently run large. And one reviewer said the women's run small. Huh?

So we're not sure that ordering them online will do much good. UGH! I DESPERATELY want these shoes!! *sigh* So, I guess we could do a 4 hour drive to Albuquerque (instead of the 2 hour drive to Ruidoso) and see if one of the 2 stores there have them stocked yet. But that's kinda crazy, right?

What to do? What to do?

Oh yeah, our hot sauce store was closed, so no salsa. Then the fudge store was closed. But it's the shoes that have me all butt hurt tonight.
